KMService.exe – What is it, Use & How to Remove it?

KMService.exe is not an essential part of Windows and the Microsoft official website advises it to remove it since it may be a virus.  Although users said on several platforms that kmservice (kmservice.exe) is used to activate MS office 2010 without having a license, which is illegal.  Executable files are often identified with the extension .exe. Should you notice such files in your computer; then do not ignore them as they can cause damage. All of the information mentioned below will help you identify the genuine files from the Trojan files.

Typically windows do not require KMService.exe file as this hinder the proper functioning of the computer. You can find these files within the operating software folder which is in the C Drive. The file size is typically between 0.07 Mb bytes and 0.15 Mb.

This KMService.exe does not bear any information about the developer. You will also notice that these particular programs will not have a separate window that you can access. The file will be in form of an unknown file within the folder that contains the Windows file. So the security is compromised is high.

File Location

You will find such Files in the C Drive. And the size of the files can be from 0.07 Mb to 0.15 Mb. This is not a typical Windows file. As said above, the KMService.exe is not a genuine part of Windows, thus it should be removed. Here is the Microsoft official website that recommends removing Kmservice.exe from the system.

If you notice that KMService.exe is running on system background and consuming CPU resources, then you can remove or uninstall it from Control Panel.

How To Solve Problems Related To KMService.exe

To make sure that you do not face any issues with KMService follow the following steps:

Method 1 – Clean Disk Space

  1. Press the Windows and R button together
  2. Type cleanmgr and click on OK

  3. Disk Cleanup will open, select C drive, and click on the OK button

  4. It will take a few seconds to open, then select all checkbox which you want to remove.
  5. Now, click on OK

  6. Pop-up windows will open, select Delete files.

This will remove all temp files from your computer and if the KMService.exe is stored in the temp folder then it will be removed automatically.

Method 2 – Run Sfc/Scannow

Before using this method make sure that you execute the below command using Admin access. This command line will find any corrupted file and replace it with the original Windows system file.

  1. Click on the Start button, type cmd, and hit the OK button
  2. Command Prompt will open, type sfc/scannow, and press Enter

  3. Let the process finish the process and then restart the PC.

Method 3 – Uninstall using Control Panel

  1. You can also uninstall KMService using Control Panel >> Uninstall a Program

To deal with the problem in a slightly more effective way you can utilize software called “security task manager”.  This will let you monitor all the programs that are active. You will also have access to hidden processes such as the browser and keyboard monitoring. A  risk rating will help you locate a Trojan, malware, or potential spyware, Malwarebytes, Anti-Malware will remove trackers, malware, keyloggers, Trojans, adware, and sleeping spyware from the hardware, thus making your computer very safe.

Method 4 – Remove it from Registry

  • Click on Start, type Regedit, and press OK
  • Click on Yes
  • Press the F3 button to search
  • Type KMService and click on Find Next
  • If it finds KMService in the registry, then right-click on a file and Delete it.

 Method 5 – Run Antivirus

The last and most effective way is to Scan all drives and files using good Antivirus. You may use antivirus like Kasperky or Avast to scan your system. Make sure to keep the Antivirus up-to-date before running the scan so that it can easily identify KMService.exe and remove it from the system.
