Officeclicktorun.exe is the service name of “Microsoft Office Click to Run.exe file,” a software component of Microsoft Office 365. This process is used when the Microsoft Office software tries to install or download the updates.

What is the Officeclicktorun.exe file?

As already mentioned, Officeclicktorun.exe is a part of the Microsoft Office 365 program that helps in the performance of several functions such as coordination of resources, background streaming, and related updates into your system.

That means you may notice that Officeclicktorun.exe is running the system background and consuming CPU/Memory while downloading or installing the updates. It usually happens for a minute or so and then it gets silent as soon it finishes the downloading process.

The application runs in a virtual environment while the service is active in the background automatically quickly repairing Office files.

File Size & Location

Officeclicktorun.exe can be found in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\  and the average file size of Officeclicktorun is approx 9.4 MB in Windows 10 and older systems.

Is it a virus?

Usually, Officeclicktorun.exe is considered as a safe process until it is not located in its default location i.e. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\.  Although this application is capable of monitoring mouse and keyboard activity. Therefore, experts in the industry consider its risk percentage to be 5%.

If the file doesn’t have a digital signature or consuming high CPU or Memory then you may consider scanning your computer using a reliable antivirus or anti-malware software.

Check the file location, the verified signer status, and also cross-check if the file is using too much space.

In case, if the file on your system is not a genuine Microsoft program, then you can deal with it either by disabling it or by uninstalling it.

How can you disable Officeclicktorun.exe?

Once you are confirmed that the Officeclicktorun.exe is consuming high CPU or Ram then you may follow the below steps to disable it:

  • Press Windows+R keys together
  • Type services.msc and hit the Enter button
  • Locate Microsoft Office Click to Run > Right-click > Properties.
  • From the General tab, select Startup type and then choose “Disable” from the drop-down menu.
  • Press OK and then restart the computer again.

If Officeclicktorun is using RAM or CPU on a frequent basis then you can delete all temp files:

1) Open C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache directory

2) Select all files

3) Press the Shift+Delete button together

4) Click on Yes if a pop-up window Open

5) Now, restart the system

Another quick way to stop Officeclicktorun running in the system background is to use the Task Manager, here are the steps:

1) Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc button together

2) Click on the Details tab

3) Locate Officeclicktorun.exe, right-click and select End Task

4) Close the Task manager

How to remove the Officeclicktorun.exe file?

Removing is not recommended at all. However, if you are not using MS Office then you may follow the below steps to remove it:

  • Click on Windows logo, type Control Panel, and click on it
  • Click on Uninstall a program located under Program & Features option.

  • Further, click YES whenever prompted.
