Prodreg.exe file belongs to the Dell Product Registration program developed by Dell for Windows OS. This is not an essential part of Windows OS and can be removed safely. The main function of Prodreg.exe is to execute and run the Dell Product Registration utility.

What is it & its uses

Prodreg.exe allows Dell computer users to register their products with Dell. This makes them eligible for various benefits like:

  • Customer Support
  • Activating and checking Computer’s warranty status
  • Extending the warranty period by phone or via Dell’s website
  • Intimation of any offers

Version 1.16.1 of Dell Product Registration is the version used by most users. 

File size & Location

The location of Prodreg.exe is C:\Program Files\System Registration\prodreg.exe and some time it may be under C:\Program Files(x86) \System Registration\prodreg.exe subfolder, depending on a 32 bit or 64-bit system.  The file size of Dell Product Registration program is approx 4.01 MB.

There are other similar executable files like DBRCrawler.exe that belongs to Dell.

Is it safe or a virus?

Prodreg.exe is a trustworthy application. But malware can assume a similar identity and corrupt the system.

There are two ways to check if that file is a malware:

  • If the location of Prodreg.exe is not in the System Registration subfolder of Program files in C drive.
  • If it is not digitally signed to Dell Inc. by VeriSign as shown in Prodreg.exe’s Properties.

Common Errors

Some common errors encountered with Prodreg.exe are:

  • prodreg.exe server busy message
  • ” prodreg.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”
  • “Access violation at address FFFFFFFF in module prodreg.exe”

These errors occur mostly because one or more of the 45 files downloaded along with the Dell Product Registration Program does not install properly. 

How to Disable Prodreg.exe?

If you are seeing that the Deel Laptop is showing ‘Server Busy’ error message then it means that it’s executed by Prodreg.exe file. In that case, you can follow the below steps to disable this program:

1) Press Windows+R button together

2) Type msconfig and click on OK button

3) Click on Startup tab and look for Dell Registration or System Registration 

In Windows 10, click again on Open Task Manager to locate the Registration process.

4) Right-click over the application and click on Disable.

Now restart the laptop to take effect and Prodreg.exe error message won’t appear again.

How to remove Prodreg.exe?

There are two ways that can be used to remove prodreg.exe:

  • By searching for “Dell Product Registration” program in the “Add or Remove Program” section of Control Panel and uninstalling it.
  • You may also use third-party Uninstaller like CCleaner or Revo Uninstaller.
